The Ireland-U.S. Council's 2021 Award For Outstanding Portraiture Presented To Emma Stroude for Fifteen

Prudential Financial’s Sponsorship Supports This Important Arts Program

Emma Stroude’s portrait of her daughter, “Fifteen” has been chosen as the winner of the 2021 Award for Outstanding Portraiture, sponsored by the Ireland- U.S. Council in conjunction with The Irish Arts Review. The award is presented in Ireland to an artist whose work is judged to be of outstanding merit. The Award is an important part of the Ireland-U.S. Council’s program to support the arts and arts education in Ireland. Council member-company Prudential Financial is the principal financial sponsor of this program.

The Ireland-U.S. Council supports appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland

The Ireland-U.S. Council today added its voice to the calls for the swift appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland by President Biden which were first suggested by the Irish Echo Newspaper and endorsed by the influential Ancient Order of Hibernians organization.

Denis O’Brien, Chairman & Founder of Digicel, to Receive the Ireland-U.S. Council’s 2019 Award for Outstanding Achievement at 57th Annual Dinner in New York

The Ireland-U.S. Council will present its Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2019 to Denis O’Brien, Chairman & Founder of Digicel to mark his distinguished and successful business career and to underline his notable and important achievements in building bonds between America and Ireland.

The Ireland-U.S. Council Award is also presented to celebrate his significant and generous philanthropy over many years to causes aimed at improving the lives of poor people and those less-fortunate especially in the fields of education and healthcare. For example, in Haiti the Digicel Foundation has invested over $60 million in building 178 schools with over 60,000 students in attendance. Other major philanthropic projects are ongoing in Jamaica, Papua New Guinea and in Ireland.

The Ireland-U.S. Council’s 2019 Award For Outstanding Portraiture To Be Presented To Belfast Artist Gareth Reid

Prudential Financial’s Sponsorship Supports This Important Arts Program

Belfast artist Gareth Reid is the winner of this year’s Award for Outstanding Portraiture, sponsored by the Ireland-U.S. Council in conjunction with the Irish Arts Review and in association with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). The Award is presented in Ireland to an artist whose submission is judged to be of outstanding merit. The Award is an important part of the Council’s program to support the arts and arts education in Ireland.

The winning painting is a portrait entitled “Girl in a Red Room” and was chosen from all exhibits at the Royal Hibernian Academy’s 189th Annual Exhibition, opening in Dublin today. At the prize-giving ceremony at the RHA yesterday, Mr. Reid was presented with the Ireland- U.S. Council’s €5,000 award bursary. A formal presentation of the Awards Ceremony citation will be made by Council Ireland Chapter President Dr. Michael Somers at the Council’s Midsummer Gala Dinner on Friday, June 28, 2019 at a dinner in Dublin Castle.

The Business Summit on Ireland-U.S. Economic Relations in New York City in March will kick off with an opening night dinner on Wednesday, March 15 when the Guest Speaker will be Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management & Budget (OMB), one of the highest-ranking economic policy officials in the new Trump Administration. Joint effort with Ibec, Ireland’s most influential business representative group

The Ireland-U.S. Council will stage a Business Summit on Ireland-U.S. Economic Relations jointly with Ibec, Ireland’s largest and most influential business employer representative organization. The event, which will include top internationally recognized experts as speakers, will be held at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. It will open with a reception and dinner on the night of Wednesday, March 15 and will continue with morning sessions on Thursday, March 16, 2017 concluding with lunch.

European Commission’s Ruling on Ireland’s Tax Treatment of Apple’s Operations

It’s been big news on both sides of the Atlantic. The decision announced with great fanfare in Brussels by European Commission regulators that Ireland’s tax treatment of Apple’s operations in the Emerald Isle violated Europe’s rules on state aids to industry – to the tune of a headline-grabbing $14.5 billion.

Ambassador Walter J.P. Curley

long-time Ireland-U.S. Council Supporter – dies in New York City at age 94

It was with the greatest sadness that we learned of the passing of long-time Ireland-U.S. Council Board Member Ambassador Walter J.P. Curley who died this week in New York at the age of 94. He was a native of Pittsburgh, PA, attended Phillips Academy Andover, Yale University, Harvard Business School and the University of Oslo, and had an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Trinity College, Dublin.

It was with the deepest regret and the greatest sadness that we learned of the passing on May 10, 2016 of Daniel P. Tully, former Chairman & CEO of Merrill Lynch, now part of Bank of America. He served as President of the Ireland-U.S. Council from 1990 to 1993. He was 84.

Joseph M. Walsh - An Appreciation

It is with the deepest regret that we have learned of the death of long-time Ireland-U.S. Council Board Member Joseph M. Walsh, also known as Joe, who was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Curtis Circulation Company in New Milford, New Jersey, one of the world’s largest magazine distribution companies. He passed away at the Joe Raso Hospice Center in New City NY where he had been receiving care following complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 72 years old.

A formal presentation of the Award citation will be made by Council Ireland Chapter President Dr. Michael Somers and Council President Brian W. Stack at the Council’s Midsummer Gala Dinner on Friday, June 26, 2015 at a dinner in Dublin Castle. The Guest Speaker at this event will be Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Health in the Government of Ireland.

Padraig McManus, the Chief Executive of Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board (E.S.B.), will occupy the speaker’s platform at a Council luncheon scheduled for Thursday, May 1 at Dublin’s Four Seasons Hotel. The energy company recently announced a €22 billion capital investment plan, fully half of which will be directed at renewable energy sources.

Council Seeks New Program Of Work Permits for American Citizens in Ireland
The Council has asked the Government in Ireland to introduce a program of work visas for American students, and those in America already working in their career fields, to experience the workplace in Ireland, for a certain limited period of, say, 18 months to two years. Currently, no such visa program exists.
