The Ireland-U.S. Council will
present its Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2019 to Denis
O’Brien, Chairman & Founder of Digicel to mark his distinguished and
successful business career and to underline his notable and important
achievements in building bonds between America and Ireland.
The Ireland-U.S. Council Award is also presented to celebrate his
significant and generous philanthropy over many years to causes
aimed at improving the lives of poor people and those less-fortunate
especially in the fields of education and healthcare. For example, in Haiti the Digicel
Foundation has invested over $60 million in building 178 schools with over 60,000
students in attendance. Other major philanthropic projects are ongoing in Jamaica,

The Ireland-U.S. Council’s 2019 Award For Outstanding Portraiture To Be Presented To Belfast Artist Gareth Reid

Belfast artist Gareth Reid is the winner of this year’s Award
for Outstanding Portraiture, sponsored by the Ireland-U.S. Council in conjunction with the
Irish Arts Review and in association with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). The Award
is presented in Ireland to an artist whose submission is judged to be of outstanding merit.
The Award is an important part of the Council’s program to support the arts and arts
education in Ireland.
The winning painting is a portrait entitled “Girl in a Red Room” and was chosen from all
exhibits at the Royal Hibernian Academy’s 189th Annual Exhibition, opening in Dublin today.
At the prize-giving ceremony at the RHA yesterday, Mr. Reid was presented with the Ireland-
U.S. Council’s €5,000 award bursary. A formal presentation of the Awards Ceremony citation
will be made by Council Ireland Chapter President Dr. Michael Somers at the Council’s
Midsummer Gala Dinner on Friday, June 28, 2019 at a dinner in Dublin Castle.

It was with the greatest sadness that we learned of the passing of long-time Ireland-U.S.
Council Board Member Ambassador Walter J.P. Curley who died this week in New York
at the age of 94. He was a native of Pittsburgh, PA, attended Phillips Academy Andover,
Yale University, Harvard Business School and the University of Oslo, and had an
Honorary Doctorate in Law from Trinity College, Dublin.

It is with the deepest regret that we have learned of the death of long-time Ireland-U.S.
Council Board Member Joseph M. Walsh, also known as Joe, who was Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer at Curtis Circulation Company in New Milford, New Jersey, one
of the world’s largest magazine distribution companies. He passed away at the Joe
Raso Hospice Center in New City NY where he had been receiving care following complications
from pancreatic cancer. He was 72 years old.

Council Seeks New Program Of Work Permits for American Citizens
in Ireland
The Council has asked the Government in Ireland to introduce a program of work visas
for American students, and those in America already working in their career fields,
to experience the workplace in Ireland, for a certain limited period of, say, 18
months to two years. Currently, no such visa program exists.

The Council's Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2007 was presented to
Philip Lynch, Chairman & CEO of One51 plc, one of Ireland's leading energy and waste
infrastructure companies. The award was presented at the Council's 45th Annual Dinner
